feat(api): public REST API with API-key auth and OpenAPI docs - #784
Continuation of #707 — closes#615. Huge thanks to @kushpvo for the bulk of this work (API keys, handler, spec generation, UI); this PR reworks the review-requested parts and rebases onto the latest main.
What it adds
A versioned public REST API at /api/v1 for integrations (e.g. budgeting tools):
Auth: API keys created in Account → API keys (SHA-256 hashed, spro_ prefix, optional expiry). Authorization: Bearer spro_… (or X-API-Key). Keys act with the user's permissions; every endpoint and write path runs the same checks as the app, including group membership.
Endpoints (13): user.me, user.getFriends, user.getOwnExpenses, user.getBalancesWithFriend, user.getFriend, group.getAllGroups, group.getGroupDetails, expense.getBalances, expense.getAllExpenses, expense.getExpensesWithFriend, expense.getGroupExpenses, expense.getExpenseDetails, expense.addOrEditExpense. List endpoints use offset pagination (?limit=20&offset=0, integer-enforced, defaults injected into the spec).
Docs: build-time generated OpenAPI 3.1 spec (static type analysis via @trpc/openapi) served at /api/openapi.json, interactive Scalar UI at /api/docs (bundle pinned with SRI). User-facing docs in docs/api.md.
Formats: plain JSON in/out matching the generated spec (BigInt → number, Date → ISO string). Amounts additionally accept numeric strings (full precision beyond Number.MAX_SAFE_INTEGER) and ISO date strings; native superjson envelopes also accepted for tRPC-client compatibility.
Architecture (per review discussion)
Router files now export plain method records (userMethods / groupMethods / expenseMethods) and build their t.router(<record>) from them — the existing procedure code is untouched. apiRouter mounts a curated subset via a typed pickMethods helper, so each procedure exists exactly once and new public endpoints are one line.
The API gets a dedicated initTRPC instance (apiTrpc.ts) with its own plain-JSON transformer (apiTransformer.ts), so mounting app procedures in the API router can never affect /api/trpc serialization (fixes the PR's shared-_config mutation, which leaked the transformer into the app router because both instances shared the config object).
The API's addOrEditExpense shares one upsertExpenses write path with the app procedure — permission checks (group membership/archived, deleted expense handling) are inherited from main instead of being duplicated by the API.
Review feedback addressed
krokosik
router processing in the generator → curated method records, @trpc/openapi walks the real (narrow) types — spec is generated from exactly what is mounted
keep openapi.generated.json in sync → .husky/pre-push regenerates and aborts stale pushes; pnpm build also regenerates
ApiKeys.tsx i18n → account.api_keys.* keys (English only, Weblate picks up the rest); account page label translated too
isPlainValue → coerceQueryParam in src/utils/queryParams.ts (not the tRPC client entry)
"Biome?" post-processing → typed with guards, no TODO comments
expiry configurable in the UI → optional date picker; synthetic session.expires mirrors the key's expiry (expired keys → 401)
onOpenChange instead of onClose in ApiKeys (plaintext key now also cleared on desktop)
group-membership / deleted-expense checks in the write path → shared upsertExpenses (writes are rejected with 403/404 like the app)
Verification
prettier --check, lint, tsc --noEmit, unit tests (475), integration tests (15) and build all pass
End-to-end smoke-tested against a dev server: 401 without/with expired key, plain-JSON responses and POSTs, pagination defaults + fractional-limit rejection, superjson-envelope POST, non-member group access → 403, /api/trpc still superjson-encoded
Not carried over from the original PR: .opencode/package-lock.json (local artifact) and a duplicate weak upsertExpenses/createExpenseSchema copy (main's validated shared path is used instead).

This branch appears to undo recent main-branch changes alongside the new API. Removing the user deletion field can break sign-in session checks and account deletion. A missing export blocks the build. Expense lists, group pages, and balances no longer match what the app expects. The public API can also expose other users' records and accept keys from deleted accounts. These should be fixed before merging.

Remove the useCallback wrappers from the event handlers.
The repository guidelines prefer plain components with colocated handlers. React Compiler handles routine memoization. useCallback is for cases where profiling or an identity requirement justifies it. onCreate, onRevoke, and copyKey have no such requirement. This component contains no BigInt literals, so the compiler should optimize it.
Convert the three handlers to plain async arrow functions and drop the dependency arrays.
As per coding guidelines: "Prefer straightforward components and colocated event handlers."

The repository guidelines prefer arrow functions over function declarations. This file declares six helpers with export function (hashApiKey, generateApiKey, parseApiKeyFromHeaders, isApiKeyExpired, resolveApiKeyUser, toSessionUser). Convert them to export const name = (...) => .... The [trpc].ts handler and scripts/generate-openapi.ts use the same pattern.
The SHA-256 hash without a server secret is acceptable here. The key is 256 bits of randomBytes, so there is no low-entropy input to brute-force.

Coerce decimal integer query values before pagination validation.
GET /api/v1/expense.getAllExpenses?limit=01 passes "01" to coerceQueryParam, which leaves it as a string. paginationInput requires a number, so validation rejects the request before the procedure runs. Coerce decimal integer strings only. Keep non-numeric values unchanged.

Returned API amounts above Number.MAX_SAFE_INTEGER lose precision.
toPlainJson converts every bigint with Number(value), so an amount such as 9007199254740993n is returned as 9007199254740992. The v1 API accepts such amounts as numeric strings. It also documents them in its input comment. The output and input sides therefore do not match. Clients that read these amounts receive a wrong monetary value, and no error is returned.
The trigger requires an amount of about 2^53 cents or more. That is roughly 90 trillion currency units, so the impact is narrow. The stored value stays exact. The loss happens only in the response.
This keeps safe amounts as numbers. Unsafe amounts become decimal strings, which match the string input the API already accepts. The OpenAPI schemas for these amount fields declare type: integer. They must also accept a string for values above the safe range. Update the schema generator with this change.

scripts/generate-openapi.ts:83-111 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Document the X-API-Key header in the generated OpenAPI security schemes.
The generator declares only bearerAuth, but the /api/v1 API accepts X-API-Key as well. Clients that read /api/openapi.json or use the docs "Authorize" button never see the header method. The correction belongs in scripts/generate-openapi.ts. Editing openapi.generated.json directly is not enough, because the next regeneration overwrites it.
Regenerate src/server/api/openapi.generated.json after this change. The security array uses two entries, so either scheme satisfies the requirement.

@krokosik@alexanderwassbjer — the PR is ready for a final look. Since your review of #707, it's been rebased onto current main and all review feedback is addressed: a curated method-record surface (only what's mounted in apiRouter is public), a dedicated tRPC instance with a plain-JSON transformer so /api/trpc is unaffected, intended-format input coercion, integer pagination with unique tie-breakers, and i18n'd key management with optional expiry. Everything is verified end-to-end (unit + integration tests, build, live smoke test) and CodeRabbit's threads are all resolved. Happy to make any adjustments.

Input accepts numeric strings to keep precision beyond MAX_SAFE_INTEGER, but output always does Number(bigint), which silently loses it. Should we return unsafe values as strings, or reject them on input, so the two directions match?
- Move @trpc/openapi to devDependencies (build-time only) and revert

- Scope pre-push hook to runs when src/server/api/** changed, avoiding
full type analysis on docs-only pushes
- Preserve BigInt precision on output: values beyond MAX_SAFE_INTEGER
serialize as strings to match input's numeric-string support
- Add tests for BigInt precision preservation and coerceQueryParam

…h hook
Address CodeRabbit review comment on oss-apps#784: the fallback to HEAD~1..HEAD
when no upstream exists only checks the last commit, so API changes in earlier
commits of a multi-commit push could leave the spec stale. Read the push range
from stdin (local/remote SHAs per ref) and check all commits being pushed.
Fixed in commit 37ee3c9: the pre-push hook now reads the actual push range from stdin (local/remote SHA per ref) and checks every commit being pushed, not just HEAD~1..HEAD. This ensures API changes in any commit of a multi-commit push are caught.
When API files change, pnpm gen:openapi runs without an exit-status check. A failed generation can then reach git status --porcelain; if the generated file is unchanged or absent, the hook exits successfully and allows the push without a valid generated spec.

Handle remote commits that are not available locally.
A force-push can supply a remote_sha that is not in the local object database. In that case, git diff fails, but the pipeline treats the failure as no API changes and permits the push. Detect this case and fail the check or use a safe fallback. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update the `.husky/pre-push` check around `RANGE` to verify that `remote_sha`
exists in the local object database before using it in `git diff`. If it is

Each iteration overwrites RANGE, and the check after the loop uses only the last value. A multi-ref push can therefore skip API changes in earlier updates. Check each non-deletion update inside the loop. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Validate the pushed revision, not the working tree.
The ref input can identify a commit other than HEAD, but the generator reads the current working tree. A push can pass while the pushed commit has a stale spec. Generate and compare against each pushed revision, or reject non-HEAD updates. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update the pre-push hook’s gen:openapi validation so it checks the revision
being pushed rather than implicitly using the working tree: generate and compare

Merge oss-apps#707 into current main and address the maintainer and CodeRabbit
review feedback. The public API serves a curated subset of app procedures
at /api/v1 with API-key auth, offset pagination, a build-time generated
OpenAPI 3.1 spec and interactive Scalar docs at /api/docs.
- apiRouter mounts a curated subset of the app routers via exported
method records (userMethods, groupMethods, expenseMethods) so each
procedure exists exactly once; API-only variants (pagination,
plain-JSON input) live next to their app counterparts
- dedicated tRPC instance (apiTrpc) with a plain-JSON transformer, so
mounting procedures in the API router cannot affect /api/trpc; output
serialization matches the spec (BigInt to number, Date to ISO string)
- addOrEditExpense API input additionally accepts plain JSON amounts
(number or numeric string) and ISO date strings, coerced before shared
validation; writes run the same permission checks as the app procedure
- pagination requires integers (limit 1..100 default 20, offset >= 0
default 0); defaults injected into the generated spec
- API keys: sha256-hashed with spro_ prefix, optional expiry chosen at
creation; synthetic session expiry mirrors the key expiry
- ApiKeys UI fully i18n'd, supports expiring keys, and clears the
one-time plaintext via onOpenChange so desktop dialogs hide it too
- openapi generation: relative server URL, env skip moved to package.json
via cross-env, typed post-processing, prettier-formatted output;
pre-push hook keeps openapi.generated.json in sync
- Scalar docs bundle pinned to an exact version with SRI hash
Address the CodeRabbit review comments on the PR:
- add unique tie-breakers to the orderBy of all four paginated API
endpoints; expenseDate/createdAt alone are not unique and Postgres does
not guarantee tied rows keep their order between queries, so paging
clients could see duplicates or miss rows
- correct the POST example in docs/api.md to the stored sign convention
(payer amount - share, other participants negated) and say so
- pre-push hook now compares with git status --porcelain so the check
only passes once the regenerated spec is actually committed
- Move @trpc/openapi to devDependencies (build-time only) and revert
build script to next build; keep gen:openapi available on demand
- Scope pre-push hook to runs when src/server/api/** changed, avoiding
full type analysis on docs-only pushes
- Preserve BigInt precision on output: values beyond MAX_SAFE_INTEGER
serialize as strings to match input's numeric-string support
- Add tests for BigInt precision preservation and coerceQueryParam
number/boolean coercion edge cases
- Clarify expiry timezone in ApiKeys UI with expires_hint translation
- Mark openapi.generated.json as linguist-generated in .gitattributes
Fixed in commit 4bb8557: the pre-push hook now reads the actual push range from stdin (local/remote SHA per ref) and checks every commit being pushed, not just HEAD~1..HEAD. This ensures API changes in any commit of a multi-commit push are caught.
Update: Also rebased the entire PR onto current main (28ee49a) to resolve merge conflicts with #787 (account deletion) and #789 (infinite scroll). The branch now has 4 clean commits on top of main.

Restore User.deletedAt. Session lookup and account deletion read this field.
The head schema removes User.deletedAt, but code still reads and writes it. The Prisma client rejects these queries when the field is absent from the User model. Every session lookup that reaches getSessionAndUser can then fail, and account deletion fails with it.
src/server/auth.ts:69-73 queries db.user.findUnique with select: { deletedAt: true } and checks user.deletedAt.
src/server/api/services/deleteAccount.ts:20 reads user.deletedAt. Line 28 writes deletedAt: new Date(). Line 44 filters groupUsers with user: { deletedAt: null, ... }.
src/server/api/routers/user.ts:263 filters with deletedAt: null.

Use one currency-aware implementation for both routers.
userMethods.getBalancesWithFriend groups GroupBalance only by groupId, although currency is part of the balance identity. This can sum different currencies into one amount. It also returns only nonGroupBalances[0], which drops other currency rows, and it does not return currency.
userRouter spreads userMethods and then redefines both getBalancesWithFriend and getFriend. The app therefore uses the later local procedures, while apiRouter mounts the procedures from userMethods.
The shared balance procedure does not contain simplifyDebts handling, but the app-only duplicate still does. The duplicate getFriend also preserves defaultSplit behavior. Do not delete the duplicates without preserving those app behaviors in the shared implementation.
